Your Email Address is Whatttt????
A FIRST IMPRESSION STARTS LONG BEFORE THE INTERVIEW. A first impression begins the second you apply/submit your resume for a position of interest. A recruiter who is examining your resume and credentials is looking closely at how you represent yourself at that first introduction. Before a recruiter even has a chance to look at your experience listed on a resume, they see your name and your email address. For this reason, it is imperative that the two match up, and that your email address is professional. I’ve seen so many inappropriate email addresses at the top of resumes. You’d be surprised (and even appalled) by some of them.
An email address should always include your first and last name. Additionally, your resume document (when sent as an attachment) should be saved as your first and last name (e.g. ‘John Smith_resume 4.2014’ always works because your name and submission timeframe is clear and identifiable). Many recruiters save resumes in files for future reference, and most won’t take the time (nor do they have the time, for that matter) to save your resume under the proper name. If your resume document is not saved under your full name, the risk is greater that your resume might turn into a lost file.
THE CANDID TRUTH: First impressions are lasting ones. Recruiters are human, and therefore, they can make judgments based on silly and senseless applicant mistakes. Establishing consistency in your submission materials will surely highlight your professionalism at first contact.
